Formula One: Missing Sponsors

Screen Shot 2018-01-02 at 15.29.51.png

As the clock struck midnight on December 31st 2017, many sponsorship relationships throughout the F1 Grid reached their conclusion. In the coming weeks and months, numerous new agreements will be announced at both a team and championship level as attention focuses on the season ahead. For myself as a lifelong fan of the business of Formula One, now aspiring to develop a career in this side of the sport, this period between commercial contract expiry and new contract announcements can be fascinating.

No team will encourage media to make a story out of the end of a partnership, so don’t expect any press releases confirming a departure, instead head to the partner’s section of the website of the team you follow and see if you can spot the brands or names suddenly missing from the list.

A well-publicised partnership expiration is that of the relationship between Santander and Scuderia Ferrari.  A partnership many believe will be replaced by the promotion of long-term team partners Phillip Morris introducing e-cigarettes to Formula One with the brand IQOS. If true, e-cigarettes could represent a high-value sector of sponsors for F1 moving forward, assuming advertising challenges can be overcome, and OEM’s including Mercedes and Renault are comfortable with the association.

Intriguingly, whilst Santander has been removed from the Scuderia Ferrari Website, it remains on the McLaren (no longer McLaren Honda) website. Santander, whilst no longer a brand represented on the McLaren livery have been partnered with the Woking based team since Alonso first joined the team in 2007.

Can you spot any other team websites with mysteriously missing partners? There are some out there which may surprise…

Formula One: One last ridiculous Santander ad for Jenson Button!

screen-shot-2016-12-06-at-15-00-32

Jenson Button’s F1 Racing Career may have come to an end on lap 12 of the 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, but those sponsorship commitments are far from over.

In recent years Santander UK and Jenson Button have developed a reputation for putting out adverts so cringe worthy they are almost good. In what could be Jenson’s final advert for the bank every effort is made to surpass his earlier efforts!

So for the Jenson Button fan struggling to come to terms with his retirement sabbatical, check out this clip from Santander UK:

While you are there, why not enter the competition too, who knows maybe Jenson will deliver an unexpected Christmas present just for you!

Formula One: Kimi & Seb head to the beach

Ahead of 2016 Brazilian Grand Prix, Scuderia Ferrari drivers Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen tried their hand at Beach Volleyball. In an event organised by long term team partner Santander the duo competed against each alongside banking customers who later took time out to explain the challenges of fitting training into a hectic life schedule.

Scuderia Ferrari and partners Santander, UPS, & Shell have gone to great lengths in 2016 to create accessible content for fans of the team to engage with their drivers in new and original ways.  The approach is clearly paying off as Kimi, notorious for not enjoying the commerical aspect of F1 life, can be seen in this film actually smiling!

Great job Santander!

Formula One: 2016 Mclaren teamwear revealed

Screen Shot 2016-01-11 at 16.07.28

In a new Sanatander UK advert released over the weekend, Jenson Button is seen wearing Mclaren 2016 teamwear for the first time.

The design suggests the team will retain a similar style to 2015 in both teamwear and colour palette . The design does not feature any previously unannounced partnerships for the team, although these could be added at a later date.

The design has received a mix response on social media, however without the context of the complete kit it is difficult to draw any firm conclusion.

The advert can be seen in full here.

Formula One: McLaren-Honda and Jenson Button renew partnership with Santander

McLaren-Honda have announced  the extension of its partnership with leading bank Santander UK plc.

The agreement is set to continue the partnership for a further five years until the end of 2020, with British driver and 2009 F1™ World Champion, Jenson Button, continuing to feature prominently in Santander campaigns.

Having first partnered together in 2007, McLaren-Honda and Santander have enjoyed a long and successful relationship. Since then, McLaren-Honda and Jenson Button have appeared in many of Santander’s campaigns, including a number of TV adverts, the launch of Santander’s vision for a London Grand Prix in 2012, ‘Secret Santa’ customer surprises and, most recently, the ‘Summer of Cycling’ events on Santander Cycles across London.

McLaren has played an important role in helping establish and grow the Santander brand in the UK, where it is now a household name and has become the nation’s most switched-to bank, attracting one in four new retail customers.

Ekrem Sami, managing director of McLaren Marketing, said: “Santander and McLaren-Honda have enjoyed an incredibly strong and mutually beneficial relationship since 2007. Our renewed partnership demonstrates a well-founded belief in the team’s ability to successfully activate brands around a shared, common vision for the future. I look forward to developing the relationship and hope to see it continue to go from strength to strength for both brands.”

Keith Moor, chief marketing officer for Santander UK, added: “Our sponsorship of McLaren and Jenson Button has played an important role in helping Santander build a strong awareness across the UK, helping to establish ourselves as a scale challenger to the ‘Big 4’ banks with the 1I2I3 Current Account and, more recently, support our launch of the Santander Cycles scheme in London.”

Jenson Button, McLaren-Honda driver, said: “I’m really pleased to continue working with Santander, as is everyone at McLaren-Honda. We’ve enjoyed a great partnership to date and I look forward to that continuing. While first and foremost I’m a racing driver, I’m also a passionate cyclist, and so I’m looking forward to doing more with Santander Cycles and helping encourage more people to get involved.”

So we can expect more FANTASTIC adverts like this in 2016!
