Formula One: Lewis goes off-brand

Screen Shot 2016-03-16 at 20.07.47.png

During a Law in Sport seminar held in London, Caroline McGrory, Mercedes director of legal and commercial affairs has commented on the challenges the team face from team partners HUGO BOSS and PUMA when it comes to Lewis Hamilton’s personal fashion choices.

It’s constantly monitored,” Caroline commented. “I always have to send stroppy messages on race weekends telling Lewis to stop wearing his bright yellow Louis Vuitton trainers when he should be wearing his Puma trainers.”

“He is very into his fashion, he is experimenting with his different styles at the moment, constantly going to fashion shows,” McGrory said. “We get a phone call from Hugo Boss saying, ‘Why is Lewis at an Alexander McQueen show?’ He’s doing that in his personal time. Actually he’s allowed to do that.

“But it’s a fine line because then we have to phone Lewis up and say, ‘Actually can you please not tweet so much about all these other fashion designers. Just say something nice about Hugo Boss now and then.'”

Drivers don’t like the fact they receive no additional cash from team sponsorships.

“It also blocks out the category for the driver to be able to go and do their own personal deal,” McGrory added. “So they are often not that happy when we do a team deal when they are not making any money from it.”

It’s not just the drivers who have to be on-message with sponsors. Until last season Blackberry was a Mercedes sponsor, which meant team members couldn’t be seen to be using Apple’s iPhones.

“Even the bosses had their iPhones in their back pocket,” McGrory said. “Publicly they had to have their Blackberrys.”

Formula One: Red Bull RB12 Launched

Screen Shot 2016-02-22 at 07.58.04

Beyond the striking matte livery unveiled in London last week, the all-new RB12 incorporates a host of improvements based on the lessons learned from the 2015 season.

Commenting on the new car and the season ahead, Team Principal, Christian Horner said: “Obviously the late engine decision last year was a challenge but we found a solution in time and the whole team has worked incredibly hard to recover over the winter. Therefore, we’re looking to build on the significant progress we made in the second half of 2015 and to carry that momentum into the early races of this season

“My hopes for this season are that we genuinely make progress from where we were last year; that we get our heads down and we really develop the car well and hopefully with some performance coming on the power unit side as well that will allow us to get closer to some of our immediate rivals.”

Speaking about the design of the RB12, Chief Technical Officer, Adrian Newey added: “I’m often asked what area of the car I’m most pleased with but with the stable regulations we have at the moment it’s difficult to find any major new areas to exploit. Therefore, what we’ve really tried to concentrate on with this car is getting a cohesive package for all the parts – the suspension, the chassis dynamics, aerodynamics – that they all work together in harmony. I think we’ve managed to build on the lessons of last year and all the indications from our simulations suggest that this year’s chassis should be strong.”

Screen Shot 2016-02-22 at 07.57.33

Chief Engineering Officer, Rob Marshall added: “With the RB12, we are optimistic that we have made some good gains, but the difficulty is the wind tunnel and CFD numbers we’re seeing are our numbers and unless you can see everyone else’s numbers you don’t know where you are. We are happy that we are going in the right direction from our own point of view, but we won’t know until Melbourne.  As far as this car is concerned, I hope we can win some races. That might sound farfetched after last year, where we struggled at the beginning of the year, but I hope this year we can make a bit of a step power-wise and that will level the playing field a bit.”

Commenting further on simulation work with the RB12, Dan Fallows, Head of Aerodynamics, said: “So far, the numbers coming out of the wind tunnel and CFD are encouraging. It’s a function of everyone understanding the car that we had last year but also identifying the challenges we had and really focusing on those and I think we have made some fairly big steps forward.

“My hopes for the RB12 are that it continues the form that we had with the RB11. Obviously we didn’t get the results we hoped for but we all knew we had a good foundation in the car, in the chassis, and I’d like to see that continue. Also, the thing I’d really like to see is that the car give us a good foundation for any upgrades we get on the power unit side, from aero and everything else.”

Screen Shot 2016-02-22 at 07.57.48

Pierre Waché, Chief Engineer, Performance Engineering added: “To be satisfied with the numbers from aero is a big word, we are never satisfied. It is a continuous development process and we are not looking for absolute numbers, we are looking for relative numbers compared to others. The progress is significant and we will see if it’s enough.

Looking ahead to the new season, Paul Monaghan, Chief Engineer, Car Engineering concluded: “My hopes for the RB12? I think we have to focus on just making sure we go to Australia in the best state we can be, well prepared and then get the most out of the car we can at each race and put ourselves in a position where we can challenge for a podium or benefit from anything that happens around us.”

Formula One: Red Bull Racing Puma Livery Launch Event

Screen Shot 2016-02-18 at 02.41.58

PUMA and Red Bull Racing kicked off a new partnership at an event in London today, revealing a striking new team look.  A car transforming into street dancers, eye-catching product designs and a bold new Red Bull Racing car livery were all part of a stand-out show, which included drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat.

Hundreds of guests were treated to a powerful performance that saw an F1 car concealed under a drape morph into models.  Showing off the new PUMA Red Bull Racing product collection, these dancers entertained the crowd with an energetic routine before the new look Red Bull Racing 2016 livery was presented with a dramatic crescendo.

At the heart of the new PUMA product designs is The Stampede – a graphic illustration of charging bulls that features widely across the race suits, team wear, replica styles and lifestyle collection. This print represents the strength and determination of Red Bull Racing, and brings a bold new look to the team for 2016.

Underpinning this new partnership is PUMA and Red Bull Racing’s desire to be Faster Together, a unifying hunger that drives both brands forward. With Red Bull Racing, PUMA will continue to push the boundaries of product design and racewear technology in F1 through the multiple year partnership that will always have Faster Together at its core.

Red Bull Racing driver Daniel Ricciardo said, “There’s always a buzz in F1 at this time of year and launching the new car livery, race wear and a new team look like we did today gets the season started in a fun way. It’s pretty cool to be with PUMA, they’re a brand who get who we are and you can see that in the product designs revealed today.  It’s a bit of an understatement to say I’m excited to drive the new car next week – I can’t wait! I’m ready to work through the pre-season programme and then finally get racing in Melbourne.”

Red Bull Racing driver Daniil Kvyat added, “We’re all looking forward to the new season and the launch today was a really good way to start it. The new team kit and lifestyle look that PUMA has designed is great, and I think the fans will also really like the replica wear we have this year. PUMA’s development into the performance and comfort of racewear is really impressive. We spend hours at a time in the car, often in very extreme conditions, so having gloves, suits and bodywear that protects you is so important for us.

PUMA’s Global Marketing Director Adam Petrick said; “It’s fantastic to kick off our partnership with Red Bull Racing through an event that represents both brands so well.  PUMA enjoys many synergies with Red Bull Racing, and there’s enormous energy and excitement in both teams to bring our partnership to life in unique and creative ways – through product design, marketing and fan engagement.  Our aim was to reveal a new team kit and car livery in a way that breaks with tradition and we’ll continue to push the boundaries of this partnership through the years ahead.”

Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner said; “Seeing our new livery for this year alongside our new teamwear from PUMA was a proud moment for us. PUMA have done a very impressive job with the design of the team kit, replica and lifestyle product lines. There has been a lot of work behind the scenes to get ready for this, and it has all paid off with today’s event which I think has only built our excitement for the season ahead.”

Formula One: Lewis Hamilton Shows off his Wrestling Skills

LHPuma

Lewis Hamilton took on a rival of a different kind yesterday, swapping the tarmac for the canvas of a wrestling ring. The newly crowned Formula One World Champion appeared at the Arena Mexico to face an opponent laced in grease and leather at the spiritual home of Lucha Libre. Lewis showed his talents that extend beyond the steering wheel as he took on the wrestling star at a PUMA event in the Mexican capital.

With Formula One returning to Mexico after a 23-year absence, PUMA gave Lewis  a cultural insight into the passions of Mexico – embracing the four values of Brave, Confident, Determined and Joyful. A rousing rendition of Mariachi music fronted by the lovely Latina actress Zuria Vega got things underway, with a fussball fiesta following against the Mexican star striker Oribe Peralta. The event concluded with a spectacular finale, headlined by a wrestling extravaganza against the might of Mistico.

Speaking about his Mexican experience, Lewis said: “I never saw myself in the wrestling ring but after taking on Mistico last night I think I’ve found a new talent! I always enjoy getting an insight into the culture of race countries and last night was a brilliant experience. Seeing the spirit of the Mexican people and how they embrace their values of joy, confidence, bravery and determination was very inspiring. The enthusiasm, passion and excitement for the return of Formula One to Mexico was clear and it was an honour to share the stage with some of the country’s stars to celebrate this.
