Formula One: Button sets his sights on Schumacher

The 2016 Malaysian Grand Prix will mark Jenson Button’s 300th start in Formula One. With a career spanning 17 years to date Jenson Button ranks 3rd behind Rubens Barrichello (322) and Michael Schumacher (306) in most F1 starts in the history of the sport.

In this incredibly open interview for Mobil 1’s The Grid. Jenson highlights this statistic and references a desire make his way to the top of this ranking. Only time will tell if the falling of the chequered flag in Abu Dhabi will mark the end of Button’s F1 career, for now retirement from F1 is not on his mind. The Brit makes it clear 2017 for him will be a year in which he can take time for himself, he has a contract to race in 2018 with Mclaren if both he and the team desire, and should anything unforeseen happen between now and March 2017 there is no reason to think he would not be the team’s first choice reserve driver.

Jenson Button’s F1 career is far from over, it is hard to imagine him not wanting to experience F1 machinery under the new technical regulations. For 2017 however he states ambitions to compete in the Triathlon world championships and sample other forms of motorsport.

 

Formula One: Win a Go Kart driven by Mclaren Legends

Earlier this summer Mclaren legends of the past present and future raced against each other behind the wheel of the great motoring equaliser, the Go Kart! In an event hosted by Esso and Mcalren Honda at Fernando Alonso’s go karting circuit in Spain, Alonso, Button, Coulthard, Vandoorne and Hakkinen competed on the same track together for the first time.

Formula One: Belgian Champion in waiting?

Stoffel Vandoorne will head his home Grand Prix in Belgium this weekend as Mclaren Honda’s reserve driver. After securing the GP2 championship in dominant style in 2015, Stoffel is splitting his 2016 season between his role with Mclaren, which saw him stand in for the injured Fernando Alonso in Bahrain earlier this year, scoring the team’s first points of the 2016 campaign, and competing in the Super Formula Series in Japan.

Stoffel has done more than enough to convince the F1 paddock he is ready to make the step in to a full time drive in 2016. It is widely expected he will replace Jenson Button in the 2017 line up. Mobil One’s the Grid caught up with the Belgian to hear about discuss his 2016 year to date and expectations for the future.

 

 

Formula One: Past, Present & Future – Go-Kart Racing With McLaren-Honda

In an event for Mobil 1 and Esso, Mclaren Honda driver’s; Mika Häkkinen, David Coulthard, Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso, and Stoffel Vandoorne recently got together at Fernando Alonso’s Go Karting circuit in Spain to pit the skills of Mclaren drivers from the last 3 decades against each other.

The event saw Mika, David, and Jenson return to Go Kart for the first time in years, giving them an opportunity to roll out some tried an tested excuses for performances (of lack there of) on track. Jenson who is very media event you see him in comes across more and more like a presenter enjoyed the challenge, but was keen to point out Fernando’s home advantage.

Formula One: Indycar vs. F1. The Drivers Championship

As a Driver, if you compare the gravitas of succeeding in Formula One to Indycar, on the face of it, Formula One is the ultimate accolade. Exploring the physicality of each series tells a slightly different story.

Current era F1 cars are both lighter and more powerful than an Indycar. They produce more downforce and utilise higher performing brake performance. However, they also feature power steering. An Indycar is heavier, less powerful, produces less downforce and critically has no power steering.

In recent interview for JWGP Felix Rosenqvist following his test for the Chip Ganassi team at Mid Ohio commented, “it doesn’t matter how fit you are, the first few laps in an Indycar destroy you. I’ve not driven in F1, but compared to my time in DTM, GT’s and F3, the physical strength required to drive those cars is much greater”

You see it in an Indycar driver’s physique, they train to build physical upper body strength much more than cardio work. Completing an Indycar race is far more physically demanding than an F1 race under current regulations. Current leading F1 drivers such as Daniel Ricciardo have acknowledged this and called for the 2017 regulations to place more emphasis back towards the driver.

The variety in circuits is another unique component to the challenge of Indycar. Over a single season driver’s will visit; street circuits, road courses, long ovals, and short ovals. Each configuration requires a very different style of driving ranging from man handling a car around St Pete, to driving like you re holding a cup of tea you can’t spill around Indianapolis. Drivers can’t afford to specialise in one style of racing. To win in Indycar you have to be strong in all circuits. As Will Power explains in the film below from Mobil One’s The Grid:

Ultimately Formula One elevates a driver’s profile to global super stardom, but is Indycar the real human test of raw skill? With former F1 driver, now Indycar winner Alex Rossi opting to complete his season in Indycar rather than return to F1 with Manor Racing this season perhaps the tide is turning. Indycar has created an environment in which driver skill and strength is key, the economics of the series enable drivers to earn a living with reduced pressure around finding a budget to race.  Has Indycar quietly become the new home of the real racing driver?

In what might seem like a strange career move he joined Mclaren, ultimately becoming Jenson Button’s race engineer. Mobil One’s the grid spent time with Tom to hear more about his story and what drives him forward.

In the build up to the British Grand Prix this weekend, Jenson Button talks to Mobil 1 the Grid about his feelings towards the track. Whilst acknowledging changes made to the circuit in 2011 were made with the ambition of increasing overtaking opportunities, Jenson misses the fast flowing challenge of the circuit of old.

This in no way diminishes his will to perform strongly around the circuit. Despite never winning at his home Grand Prix, the atmosphere created by the fans make the event one of his highlights of the season. Come rain or shine the British fans are guaranteed to come out in force to support their drivers.

IndyCar: VIDEO -100th Running of the Indy 500

This weekend will see the 100th running of the Indy 500 take place. Mobil One’s the Grid explore the history of the event and interview previous race winners including; Juan Pablo Montoya, Vin Diesel Tony Kanaan, and Ryan Hunter Reay, Alongside drivers bidding to find success around the brickyard such as Marco Andretti.

In addition to sharing dates, the Indy 500 shares the accolade of the jewel in motorsport crown with the Monaco Grand Prix. With an expected track side audience of 400,000 and a global viewing audience in the 100 millions, wining the Indy 500, like winning around Monaco raises a driver to truly iconic status.

 

Formula One: VIDEO – Mclaren: Life begins at 50

Sunday May 22nd marks the 50th anniversary of Mclaren’s first Formula One race. Bruce Mclaren took to the wheel of the MB2 around the streets of Monaco. Despite managing only 9 laps before an oil leak bought an early end to his race, the race represents the beginning of one of the most successful teams in Formula One history.

Having participated in 791 race weekends, Mclaren have a amassed 182 wins, sealing 8 constructors world championships and 12 drivers championships. Only Scuderia Ferrari have a longer history in the sport.

Looking ahead to this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix, recent performances, specifically pace shown in the final sector of a lap around the Circuit de Barcelona – Catalunya, suggest Mclaren Honda could be an outside contender for a podium finish. With odds of 100/1 for Fernando Alonso and 150/1 for Jenson Button, an each way bet on the duo might be worth thinking about. After a number of challenging seasons the Mclaren Honda package is looking increasingly competitive, with the promise of ultimatly challenging the dominant Mercedes becoming more tangible with every passing race weekend. Perhaps the team’s 50th anniversary will spark the beginning of a new era.
