Formula One: VIDEO – Rosberg on THAT accident

Despite a frustrating race day for the entire Mercedes AMG Petronas team, Nico Rosberg maintained his commitment to talk to fans directly  after every race this season through Facebook book live. Nico takes the opportunity to explain the accident from his perspective and reflect on what happens next

Earlier through the Team press release Nico added “ I had a great start and I was ecstatic after passing Lewis around the outside of turn one. At that point, it was my race to win. I came out of turn three and realised I was down on power with the wrong mode selected due to the engine mode switch being in the incorrect position. Lewis was closing in, so I decided to make a clear move to the right hand side as soon as possible, to close the door and show him that wasn’t an option. I was very surprised that Lewis went for the inside anyway. The next thing I knew, we were in the gravel trap. I’m gutted, not just for myself but for the whole team, it’s the worst feeling as a driver.”

An equally disappointed Lewis Hamilton commented “I had a decent start from pole but got slipstreamed on the way to the first corner and lost the lead. Coming out of turn three, I was catching Nico really quickly and went for the gap on the right – I had part of my car alongside but then had to take to the grass. The gap was there and, if you’re a racing driver, you go for that gap. We saw what happened after that. I’m hurt and disappointed for the team most of all because we lost 43 points today. We’re all here working together towards the same result and the team give me the opportunity to race with the work they do. When I came to a stop in the gravel trap, all I could think about was how gutted I was for the team – that’s where I feel the pain. But we will move on together and come back stronger in Monaco.

It is clear both drivers are extremely disappointed with the outcome of the Spanish Grand Prix for themselves and the team. Fortunately the FIA have deemed the accident to be a racing incident with no further action to be taken. Both drivers and the should now focus on the post race test and prepare for the Monaco GP in two weeks time. Toto Wolff has been keen to assure that whilst this kind of issue is not acceptable, the team will maintain it’s philosophy to allow their drivers to race:” After all the hard work we’ve put in over the past two weeks it’s deeply disappointing to come away with no points, but in my opinion this was a racing incident, with the drivers racing for position, and I don’t want to start blaming one or the other. Both Lewis and Nico are upset and we talked with them, looking at the pictures and the data, to determine exactly what happened. By letting the drivers race as we do, this kind of eventuality can happen but we won’t change our approach – we owe it to Formula One and the fans to let them race. But today, it was the work of the whole team that finished in the gravel trap, and this isn’t what we want to see happen – both of the boys know how much hard work goes into each race weekend and that they have the responsibility to bring that home. We have matured as a team over the past years, so we will be able to move on from this and, hopefully, fight back in a positive way in Monaco.”

Formula One: Scuderia Ferrari embrace social media with #ReadySetRed

Scuderia Ferrari have launched a competition through social media channels; Twitter, Instagram,and Facebook , to give fans a chance to take part in the launch of the 2016 challenger on the in February.

Fans are invited to make posts across their social media profiles to promote the launch using the hashtag #ReadySetRed. Participants will gain points for engagement with the top 10 finishers being invited to take part in the launch of the car through Skype.

Many predicted the countdown to the launch of this competition which has been live on the Ferrari homepage for a number of days would in fact be the launch of the car. The disappointment of this not being the case has resulted in a level of backlash from fans and rival teams a like. It will be interesting to monitor the levels engagement in the coming days once the initial reaction has passed.

During a period in which Formula One is often criticised for its lack of social media engagement it is a shame that when a team develops an original activation strategy the response is not more positive.

Rather than spurning the Scuderia’s approach perhaps teams can take the lead and try to surpass their engagement efforts.

FORMULA E – PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCED WITH LITTLE DOT STUDIOS

Formula E continue to lead the way in Social Media engagement with the announcement of a partnership with Little Dot Studios, a next generation broadcaster and producer, creating and distributing video content across YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Periscope.

Founded by Andy Taylor and Selma Turajlic just over two years ago, Little Dot Studios has grown rapidly and now distributes video content on social platforms for over 60 producers, broadcasters and rights-holders worldwide. In August alone, Little Dot Studios amassed over 350 million views to its client’s content. Under the partnership, Little Dot Studios will distribute social videos including clips, highlights and compilations from each race, as well as unseen footage from the pitlane and behind the scenes. Little Dot Studios will also be on site at each race, producing original video content for each of the social platforms.

Opinion – In the spirit of continuous improvement Formula E continue exploit social media as a tool to bring the series to the public. It is impressive to see Formula E can make these forms of agreements alongside TV broadcasting deals with the likes of Eurosport, ITV, & Rai, a feet Formula One either have not attempted or have not been able to manage. In a period of growth and with a strategy of increasing brand awareness Formula E continue to make all the right noises. The challenge will come in attempting to monetize the sport in the future. 

Formula E – IN-RACE VOTING FOR FANBOOST IN SEASON TWO

Formula E fans will have the chance to boost their favourite driver during the races this season following changes confirmed to this unique socially interactive concept.

Starting at the Beijing ePrix on October 24, voting for FanBoost will remain open during the opening six minutes of the race.

As well as being able to vote during the race, fans will also find it much easier to have their say as changes to the voting system will make it possible to vote using a hashtag on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. This has been achieved through a partnership with Telescope, the global leader in real-time fan engagement.

Voting will be possible through the official Formula E website and app and fans will be able to vote once a day through each of the available channels. As was the case during season one, FanBoost voting will open 12 days before the race takes place, which means that voting will open for the Beijing ePrix on Monday, October 12.

As a result of these changes FanBoost will only be available on the car that the drivers get into following their mid-race car swap. Unlike last year FanBoost will provide an extra 100kJ of energy to be used in a power window between 180kW and 200kW.

This presents the three winning teams and drivers with a strategic call to make. Do they raise the power for a short boost or run at a slightly lower power for a prolonged period? As before, FanBoost can only be used once, rather than in a series of short bursts.

OPINION: In race FanBoost will in theory bring fans closer to the sport, encouraging live viewing which will be music to the ears of the FTA broadcasters recommitting to and joining the sport for season two. Flexibility in deployment will appeal to teams and drivers, but removing FanBoost from the first stint of the race feels like a miss. Qualcomm and technical partner’s developments in induction charging on track must be the ultimate end point for FanBoost. Overall it’s fantastic to see the series evolve.
