As predicted on this site earlier this year, Aston Martin Red Bull Racing have confirmed Daniel Ricciardo will leave the team at the end of this season.
As the 2018 FIA Formula One World Championship heads to Barcelona, silly season is kicking into high gear. At present, when looking towards the 2019 season, the state of play for the likely top four finishers in the Constructors Championship this season is as follows:
Mercedes: both drivers out of contract
Ferrari: One seat open
Red Bull Racing: One seat open
Renault: both seats open
Being only four races into the 2018 season it may seem a little premature to be talking about 2019, but the events of Baku are likely to play a pivotal role in the decision-making process across the market.
With 99% certainty, it can be expected Lewis Hamilton will or has already renewed his commitment to Mercedes for 2019 and beyond in what will likely be his final contract as a driver in Formula One. Leaving a single seat with the Silver Arrows. Whilst many have questioned his outright ability to take the fight to his competitors, Bottas has proved to be a reliable second driver for the team. Lewis’ response towards his teammate after being gifted his first win of the year, illustrates a team working in cohesion. Management would have to think long and hard about what they were trying to achieve in looking to replace Bottas. I expect he will be retained for a third season unless Ocon finds himself without a seat at Force India.
Over at the Scuderia, Kimi has been in his final season since he rejoined the team in 2014. Whilst never stella, he again creates an environment in which his teammate can thrive. Arguably he weakens Ferrari’s ability to challenge for the constructor’s championship, but I personally believe he will either be renewed on another single year agreement, or make way for Charles le Clerc, who finally started to prove his strengths with a fantastic performance in Baku. I do not believe Ferrari are considering Ricciardo as a possible partner for to Vettel.
Then to the curious case of Red Bull Racing. In Baku, Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo broke the golden rule of motorsport and took each other out. The incident was a long time coming, after a race in which multiple passes between the two had already resulted in contact, the drivers compromised their own strategies and slowed each other down. With the team standing by their philosophy to “let them race”. In the short term, I don’t believe this will destroy team harmony, but it went some way to sowing the seed in Riccardo’s mind that a team not willing to favour one driver over the other may not be the team in which he achieves his ambition of securing a world championship. This coupled with the widely expected announcement that Red Bull Racing will switch to Honda power for 2019, which whilst much more competitive with Toro Rosso than it ever was with McLaren may not quite be at the level to compete for championships.
Then to Renault, a team whose 3-year plan to reinvigorate the Enstone facility and rebuild a once championship contending team, is now starting to come to fruition. From 2019 onwards Renault should expect to be challenging for outright wins and comfortably challenge the likes of Mercedes and Ferrari. In Hulkenberg and Sainz the team have a formidable but unthreatening lineup. As the team look to challenge for wins, they need a superstar driver. Could Ricciardo become Renault’s next superstar? As a works team, they are in a position to offer the salary driver of Ricciardo’s calibre should command, and they can offer something no other team can, the ability to shape the team around him. Some will say it would be risky for Ricciardo to give up a race-winning seat for a team which hasn’t won a race in over a decade, but the same could be said for Lewis Hamilton when he walked away from McLaren. Renault presents opportunities Red Bull Racing simply can’t offer.
Should the top four teams be covered by four manufacturers, it would be fantastic to see the top four drivers of the current era; Hamilton, Vettel, Verstappen, and Ricciardo behind the wheel of different cars each with their own strengths and weaknesses.
Daniel Ricciardo racing for the Renault Sport F1 Team for 2019 is my prediction for the big shift this silly season. Sainz may well return to Red Bull fold as a result, but I personally believe he will remain with Renault with Hulkenberg heading to life after F1 and Gasly moving into the Red Bull Racing team.

In the aftermath of the 2018 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which saw Aston Martin Red Bull Racing teammates Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen collide after a race long battle for position, many questions have been raised as to how the team should respond and what happens next. When contemplating the options moving forward, opinions and viewpoints aren’t always based on a fair representation of a situation or the individuals involved.
Opinions and judgements from fans and in many cases the media as to the temperament and character of a driver are more often than not based on 2-3 minute sound bites from drivers over a race weekend. It is easy to build a false impression of a driver and their perspective on issues.
Over the past 12-24 months, long-form interviews in the form of independent podcasts have grown significantly in popularity, offering a platform for individuals to offer a greater level of insight into their personalities and what makes them tick. Earlier this year Natalie Pinkham launched her own series of podcasts “In the Pink” with Daniel Ricciardo being one of the first guests.
Recorded ahead of the 2018 season, the interview covers everything from his upbringing in Perth, his almost entirely trouble free, save for a small incident with superglue, school life, to his taste in music, and self-belief. When fans seek to understand the man behind the smile, and what may or may not be going through his head following the incident in Baku, they would do well to listen to this podcast.
It would be great to see other drivers follow Ricciardo’s lead and sit down for an hour or so to record an hour ‘in the Pink”!

Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo heads to his home Grand Prix, the opening race of the 2017 F1 season, in Melbourne with aspirations of a top result. In this race preview for Mobil One’s The Grid, Ricciardo explains the complexities of preparing for the Melbourne Grand Prix and how the team will be looking complete as many laps as possible through free practice to fine tune setup.
Having experienced the Melbourne podium in 2014 (as result which was taken away following a post race sanction), Ricciardo sets out a clear ambition to reach the top step in 2017 and “taste the big bottle of champagne” Unfortunately for Daniel, with Mumm Champagne being replaced by Chandon last season, should he reach the top step he’ll have to make do with sparkling wine. That being said I’m sure it’ll still taste sweet, even if it’s from a sweaty shoe!
With the 2017 Nascar season underway and the start of the 2017 F1 season less than one week away, JWGP caught up with partner to both championships, Hisense, to understand what attracts them to motorsport and why it pays to have partnerships in both Nascar & F1.
Hisense are a Chinese electrical goods company with an annual turnover in excess of $15 Billion. The company was founded almost 50 years ago. The company is made up of more than 40 subsidiaries, each focusing on a specific sector within the electronics sector. Hisense focus their motorsport activities on promoting the Television division of the business. Following an extensive period of evaluation of Formula One, in which an evaluation of how the sport can and will work for the business and how best to activate a partnership within the sport, in 2015 Hisense joined the Red Bull Racing Formula One Team. This multi-year partnership sees the team carry Hisense branding on the nose of the car and within the team environment.
In the same year Hisense joined Nascar team Job Gibbs Racing as principle partner. JWGP caught up with Deputy Director of Global Marketing Rolland Zhang to further hear more about their involvement in motorsport.
What attracted Hisense to Motorsport?
Hisense has two motorsport partnerships; one in NASCAR and one in Formula One. Generally speaking, there are a lot of synergies between motorsport and consumer electronics as technology and innovation sit at the heart of both.
Our technology and products have been integrated into team factories and garages around the world, used by the teams and sports we sponsor to improve performance on the track. This integration of technology shows consumers that if these world-class teams trust and rely on our products, they can too.
The fact that technology is so important in team performance is similar to our own values in terms of innovation and development, so it’s fantastic for us to be part of it.
NASCAR is a hugely popular sport in the United States, so it is the perfect platform for Hisense to engage with the US market. In 2016, Denny Hamlin won the Hisense 4k TV 400 in a Hisense branded car. That played a huge role in raising the profile of Hisense in the United States. Our partnership with Red Bull Racing allows us to engage with audiences on a global scale. The Formula One season features Grands Prix in key markets that are important to our growth.

How important is social media in the activation of Hisense in F1?
Social media is the most direct route we have to reach consumers, potential customers and Red Bull Racing fans.We have social channels dedicated to our global sports sponsorships specifically, which include tennis, football and of course motorsports. Our local markets also have channels that they activate on, so we are reaching people in their local language and with market-relevant content. Last year, Hisense UK ran a Facebook Live Q&A with Max Verstappen which was very successful. It was nicely timed too, just after ‘that’ Brazil race, so there was a huge amount of engagement.
Heading into the second and final pre-season test ahead of the 2017 Formula One World Championship confidence is sky high on Daniel Ricciardo’s side of the Red Bull Racing Garage. From the bold ‘My time’ statement made by the Australian in his latest helmet design to his confident demeanour in recent interviews, Ricciardo is projecting the air of a driver destinted to challenge for the drivers crown this season.
In his first in depth interview for Mobil One’s the Grid, Ricciardo speaks candidly about his expectations for the season ahead and why he believes 2017 will be his year.

and Mobil One’s the grid have released complete steering wheel perspective footage of Daniel Ricciardo’s demonstration run at the ExxonMobil HQ.
For the news obsessed F1 fan, February 20th should be regarded as a more than satisfactory day, but by far and away the biggest news of the day came from the Circuit de Barcelona – Catalunya. Whilst other circuits are announcing payment plans to pay for F1 tickets in instalments, the home of the Spanish Grand Prix is offering entry to F1 testing in exchange for blood donations. Donation points will be set up around the circuit throughout the two pre-season tests, the circuit is working in collaboration with the Catalonian blood and tissue bank for the campaign. In Catalonia, it takes 1,000 blood donations a day to cover the needs of hospitals. In general, anyone who is in good health, who is of legal age, weighs more than 50 kilos and, in the case of women, who is not pregnant, can donate blood. Three people benefit from each donor, since the blood is separated into three components: white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets.

Can the F1 world top this tomorrow?
Red Bull Racing and Daniel Ricciardo recently completed a demonstration run at the ExxonMobil head office in Houston with Mobil One’s the grid there to film all the action. In this first public event between Red Bull Racing and ExxonMobil staff and guests were treated to a series of demonstration laps in the infamous Red bull Racing show car.
Fans of F1 livery design will note this is the first official time ExxonMobil branding, in the form of Mobil One, Esso & Exxon have been seen on a Red Bull Racing F1 car. The positioning replicates that of the teams previous fuel and lubricant supplier. It is highly likely that the livery seen in this demonstration run will be the livery the team use across 2017.
Getting behind the wheel of any racing machinery after the long winter break is always a thrill for F1 drivers, Ricciardo’s joy in taking part in this event (despite the temperatures) is clear for all to see!
As the season gets underway it is expected that similar to other sponsors transitioning from rival teams to Red Bull Racing, ExxonMobil will be keen to embrace the party lifestyle of the brand in a bid to engage with a younger demographic. It will be interesting to monitor how this evolution in Formula One activation by the brand takes shape.
From a business to business perspective, Red Bull Racing don’t (yet) have an automotive manufacturer backing the team, a typical B2B partnership opportunity for a Fuel & Lubricant supplier. The form of partnership we can expect Red Bull and ExxonMobil will be around the Energy drink becoming a prominently displayed / preferred beverage in all Esso / Exxon service stations in the months and years to come.
As Formula One heads into the 2016 season climax in Abu Dhabi, Red Bull Racing duo Max Verstappen & Daniel Ricciardo got together to review the season. The highs, the lows, their favourite trophies, their hair! The drivers are at the most open I’ve seen them.
Intriguingly both Max and Daniel, whilst acknowledging the value of their friendship they both comment they would be prepared to sacrifice friendship in return for the ability to challenge for the championship, as they have seen with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
In the build up to the Canadian Grand Prix, Red Bull Racing duo Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen spent some time trialling racing drone technology armed with streaming Go Pro’s and VR headsets.
As well as showing of their drone handling skills(!), in the film below drivers give their analysis on the Monaco Grand Prix and look forward to the Canadian Grand Prix. Both expect the upgraded power unit to perform strongly around the circuit and hope to be able to compete at the front. Hopefully the two will avoid hitting each other on track, something they didn’t manage with the drones.
The use of drone technology is understood to be high on the agenda of Formula One Management’s technical revolution in race broadcasting and content creation, with trials expected to take place over the Italian Grand Prix weekend. which is coincidently a Grand Prix which Heineken are now a title sponsor. It is not clear if the trials will lead to imagery being used in broadcast or as a form of VR trail, but it is clear FOM are looking into new ways to present the sport.
Filming & streaming content from drones could enable FOM to showcase the sport in an entirely new format at a much lower cost than more traditional filming via helicopter. The sport could even consider the use of VR to allow fans to control their view of the sport from a drone. A direction, FOM, SKY, and Mercedes AMG Petronas partner Tata Communications is keen to facilitate and encourage as discussed in this interview.
