Formula One: Toro Rosso confirm Kvyat will partner Sainz in 2017

Screen Shot 2016-10-22 at 16.27.17.png
Scuderia Toro Rosso have confirmed that it is keeping Daniil Kvyat on for the 2017 season. With Carlos Sainz’s future in the team already assured since earlier this summer, it means that continuity is the name of the game.

In so doing the team have put an end to months of speculation around the future of Daniil Kvyat with the team and the Red Bull Driver programme. At this time the implications of the confirmation on GP2 championship challenger Pierre Gasly are unclear.

Daniil Kvyat: “Great news! I’d like to thank Red Bull, Dr. Marko and all the team for their support and the faith they have shown in me since I returned to the team earlier this year. I’m very happy to stay with a team that feels like home to me. I’m really looking forward to continuing the hard work together in 2017 and I’m really aiming high. I will always be fully dedicated, giving my 200%’, and I will be pushing as hard as I usually do, that’s for sure. I’m delighted!”

Carlos Sainz: “Considering how many changes there are in the Formula 1 pipeline for 2017, it’s good to know that Daniil and I will continue to be teammates here at Toro Rosso next year. We know each other very well, as we’ve been racing together since 2010, and we work well together. I know that this season isn’t over yet, but I’m already looking forward to next year!”

Franz Tost: “It makes a change to announce our driver line-up relatively early. There are so many new elements coming to Formula 1 in general and to our team specifically, in terms of the change of power unit supplier, that having the same two drivers gives us stability and a benchmark to work from. For Carlos, it will be his third year with us, which speaks volumes when it comes to how highly we rate him. In recent races, it has been clear that Daniil is back on top form. I always told him that his future with us was in his hands and he has stepped up to the mark and delivered the sort of performances that have ensured his 2017 seat in the STR 12. We now have a very talented and strong driver pairing to tackle a season in which we expect to be very competitive.”

Formula One: Baku – Anyone’s Race?

Screen Shot 2016-06-19 at 01.27.45

Nico Rosberg may have claimed pole position for the inaugural Grand Prix of Europe from Baku, but the race for the top step is far from over.

The street circuit, featuring a 2,2km flat out section followed by the tightest series of corners on the F1 calender only a few moments later has proved to be a truly unique challenge for drivers and engineers. In the quest for ultimate top speed teams have been forced into a low downforce set up leaving cars on the absolute edge. This coupled with high pressured , hard compound tyres from Pirelli, alongside a number of niggling 1st race issues around the Baku venue gives us a thrilling Grand Prix in prospect.

The attrition rate seen in the GP2 feature race hinted at the spectacle we can expect in the F1 race. Overtaking is possible all over the circuit, T1 the most common. Run off zones whilst small are just about large enough for drivers to force competitors into them without risk of penalty. All in all, the F1 race really could be anyone’s. Judging by the GP2 race pole position or running in first place could actually work against a driver, expect oval racing levels of slipstreaming and overtaking along the main straight.

With this in mind bookmakers have been surprisingly generous in the odds being offered on drivers in the top ten.  It’s hard to pick out one specific driver to follow for the race, so I’m suggesting 5!

Lewis Hamilton -Dominated the weekend until  a shocker in qualifying, starting 10th on the grid. He is in the fastest car and Mercedes have introduced a low downforce wing which should mitigate the issues the team have had running in traffic in earlier races this season.  Winner odds 3/1

Sergio Perez – Second only to Nico Rosberg in qualifying. A gearbox penalty drops him to 7th on the grid, but after a podium in Monaco, and rumours of Ferrari considering him for 2017, Perez will be eager to impress. A great offering of 40/1 – consider an each way bet

Kimi Raikkonen – Yes Vettel out-qualified him, but he has been quietly doing his thing around Baku, and has engaged reverse far fewer times than his competitors this weekend. Also offering at 40/1

Max Verstappen / Carlos Saniz – How bold are you feeling? If Baku is to be a race of attrition, which may expect it will be. Max showed the world in Canada how calm he can be under pressure, at 80/1 the return could be great! More out there, but an even greater opportunity, Sainz. Arguably driver of the day in the last few races. With a new contract under his belt Saniz could be a great outside bet and a huge pay day at 500/1! Are you feeling bold?

Formula One: Carlos vs. Max STR factory sprint challenge

The toughest STR challenge so far? Did Max take a short cut….???

STR Russian GP Preview:

Max: “The first thing I remember from Russia is my good qualifying! It’s always good to start the race from the highest spot possible and starting P9 in Russia meant already being in the point’s positions…
Even though we unfortunately didn’t have a good start in the race: I arrived to Turn 1 and Hulkenberg spun in front of me, we collided in Turn 2 and I had a puncture. It wasn’t great, as I had damage on the car and it all got very tricky but I still tried to do my best. The track itself has many 90 degree corners, so it’s difficult to find the right line. Turns 13 to 16 are a complicated section of the track, as they are all slow-speed corners and if you get the positioning right you can gain a lot of lap-time there. My favourite part of the track is Turn 3 because it’s flat out and goes past all the Olympic flags, which you can see when you arrive to Turn 2.After a strong race in China , I hope for another good result in Sochi”
Carlos: “When racing in Sochi, at the start of the lap there’s a lot of slipstream, so it’s possible to arrive to Turn 2 with four cars side by side…
One thing I don’t like, especially here at this second corner, is the wide tarmac run-off areas, where a lot of cars just run wide instead of committing to the corner. Turn 3 is a very nice corner which is flat or very close to it”
I remember that Turn 4 is a good overtaking spot. After that there are four consecutive 90 degree corners before arriving to the back straight. Turn 13 is another good place for overtaking, but what this part of the circuit brings to mind is my terrible crash from last year – I’d say the biggest of my career so far. The final part of the circuit consists of another four 90 degree corners. The  walls are also pretty close throughout the lap, which makes it a bit more of a challenge.

Last year’s race was quite exciting so I hope for another one like that and tobe able to continue scoring points”

Formula One: Wings for Life brings Max and Carlos together

Screen Shot 2016-03-26 at 09.48.38.png

A week prior to second Grand Prix of the season, Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz made time for an important cause: Wings for Life. Both Scuderia Toro Rosso drivers were filmed in the Netherlands for the running contest, which will be held in 33 countries on 8 May. In a relaxed and friendly manner, both team mates were up against each other.

Max and Carlos will not run themselves but are enlisted to drive the so-called “Catcher Car”, effectively a moving finish line. They will set off half an hour after the start and will “sweep” up contestants along the way. Whoever is caught, is out of the race. Across the planet, all contestants will start at the same time, regardless if it is day or night. The last contestant running will be the winner.

On Friday, Max and Carlos were trained and instructed by Colin Jackson, the hurdling triple world champion and sporting director of the Wings for Life World Run. The F1 aces have adhere to the speed limit which starts at 15km/h. Not an easy things for the young racers to do. Check the live snapchat recording on the RedBull account if you want to see how the boys did.
